About Marko Kokol
Technology leader and researcher based in Maribor, Slovenia. Director of Digital and Sustainable Excellence at Borzen, Microsoft Certified Trainer for AI and Azure, and a PhD candidate in computer science (deep learning) at the University of Maribor.
Background
Over the past decade my work has moved between three vantage points: building software, leading technology organizations, and research. I spent a decade as Head of Research and Development at Semantika, working on applied machine learning, data, and software engineering. I then led application development and the IT department at Banka Intesa Sanpaolo, with responsibility for architecture, delivery, security, and the bank’s digital operations. Since late 2025 I have been Advisor to the CEO and Director of Digital and Sustainable Excellence at Borzen, Slovenia’s electricity-market operator.
Running alongside that is a research practice. I am completing a PhD in deep learning at the University of Maribor and have published peer-reviewed work in machine learning, bioinformatics, and digital health — including methods for learning from small, high-dimensional datasets, the quality of digital-health software, and transformer-based models for human-value detection. Selected publications and the Tabnetics toolkit are listed on the research page; the full record sits under my ORCID profile.
I speak regularly at Slovenian technology conferences and in the media on artificial intelligence, large language models, cybersecurity, and software engineering, and I teach AI and Azure as a Microsoft Certified Trainer.
